John Mott Bio Photo

John brings deep experience and a strong visual point of view to every project. With a background in architecture, art, photography, and sculpture, his work is grounded in a clear sense of space, form, and visual storytelling.

He approaches each project as a collaboration in building narrative. Design is not just about world-building—it’s about revealing character, tone, and emotion. His understanding of how sets shape story helps anchor scenes in a specific time and place while supporting the internal world of the characters. Through thoughtful use of color, texture, proportion, and light, John helps define not just where the action happens, but why it feels the way it does.

Known for his collaborative spirit and practical, solutions-oriented mindset, John works closely with directors, producers, and department heads to deliver bold ideas on real-world timelines.

His credits span features, limited series, and long-running television. He was nominated for an Art Directors Guild Award for Moments In Time (Discovery) and designed The Sessions (Fox Searchlight), winner of the Audience Award at Sundance. Recent projects include Shadow and Bone (Season 2, Netflix), The Americans (FX), 12 Monkeys (Syfy), and FBI (CBS/NBC).

He has spoken about production design at the NAB Show, the American Film Institute, and Comic-Con San Diego. He is a member of the Art Directors Guild (Local 800), BAFTA, and the Television Academy.

Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, John grew up in Sydney, Australia and is a US citizen.
